In a report by leading Spanish sports daily Marca, the top five candidates for Real Madrid's coaching position have been published.
According to Marca, current Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini cannot hack it as coach of the side, and thus the tabloid has taken the liberty of compiling a shortlist of coaching candidates to supplant the Chilean.
The five coaches the paper views as worthy of replacing Pellegrini as coach are all coaches currently employed by other clubs: Jose Mourinho (Inter), Fabio Capello (England national team), Carlo Ancelotti (Chelsea), Luis Felipe Scolari (Bundyodkor) and Rafa BenÃtez (Liverpool).
To supplement its shortlist, Marca also released a poll on the front page of its website asking readers which of the five coaches they preferred. Curiously, Manuel Pellegrini was left off the list of choices and was thus not an option for fans to choose, to which many fans vehemently protested in the comments section below the poll.
Pellegrini was strongly favoured by Madridistas to stay on as coach even in the wake of Los Blancos' Champions League defeat to Olympique Lyon and many believe the Chilean is doing a fine job in the Spanish capital, despite some disappointing defeats, latterly at home to Barcelona.
Of the five coaches picked by Marca in their online poll, Liverpool's Rafa Benitez and Inter's Jose Mourinho were the leading candidates with 42% and 35% of the vote respectively, in what appears to be a continuing campagin on the part of the Spanish press to destablise Pellegrini's authority as Madrid coach.
