Claude Makelele: This Is My Last Season

The on-off saga of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Claude Makelele’s retirement appears to have been finally settled as the veteran holding midfielder explained in an interview with television channel France 2 on Thursday evening that he intends to hang up his boots at the end of the season.

Recent reports suggested that the 37-year-old anchoring midfielder had been offered a one-year playing extension to his deal at the Parc des Princes with an offer to take a backroom role after that campaign was up. However, ‘Make’ has announced that he will not take up such an option, if it was ever on the table.

“I’ve decided this is my last year,” the former Real Madrid man explained.

Makelele, who has expressed his pleasure at concluding his career with les Parisiens, joined the club on a free transfer in the summer of 2008, and has since played 60 league encounters, scoring one goal. His last competitive game stands to be a Ligue 1 fixture against Montpellier, yet the Kinshasa-born star could yet lift the Coupe de France, as PSG have reached the semi-final stage, in which they will play amateur side Quevilly.
