Bayern Munich’s Schweinsteiger: We Swore To Play Like Men In The Second Half

| |

Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger revealed that his side were concerned they would be put to the sword after falling 3-0 down against Manchester United.

"The start was a bit reminiscent of Barcelona a year ago," the German international said, alluding to his team's 4-0 defeat at the Camp Nou.

Indeed, the two matches had distinct parallels. Last year, Barca were ahead 4-0 after 43 minutes, essentially killing off the tie within the first of four halves. Against United, Bayern found themselves down 3-0 in the 41st minute.

According to Schweinsteiger, the turning point of Wednesday's match was when Ivica Olic scored late in the first half, making the score 3-1.

"Ivica's goal was enormously important. It gave us faith," he explained. "At half-time, we swore to go out and play like men," he added.

In the second half, Bayern were a side vastly improved. United full-back Rafael was sent off after 50 minutes, and Bayern did well to hold onto the ball and spread United thin defensively. Arjen Robben eventually struck home a stunning volley to make the score 3-2, enough for FC Hollywood to advance on away goals.

Schweinsteiger also praised the atmosphere at Old Trafford.

"Manchester has a great stadium with great fans, but we played well against their support."

Bayern have advanced to the Champions League semi-final for the first time since 2001. The Bundesliga record champions are set to face Lyon later this month.
